Google’s Gemini API deprecations page lists the three Veo 3.1 preview models with a shutdown date of October 22, 2026, and names Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash as the replacement. If you call Veo 3.1 through the Gemini API, plan your move now. The right alternative depends on the job: Seedance 2.5 for long clips with sound and speech, Kling 3 or Kling O3 for controlled start and end frames, Wan 2.6 Flash for fast low-cost clips, or Google’s own successor if you want to stay with Google.

Here is what is known, what to move to, and a checklist so the switch does not break your work.

What Exactly Is Being Retired

According to Google’s Gemini API deprecations page (read October 1, 2026):

Model IDShutdown dateRecommended replacement
veo-3.1-generate-previewOctober 22, 2026gemini-omni-1.1-flash
veo-3.1-fast-generate-previewOctober 22, 2026gemini-omni-1.1-flash
veo-3.1-lite-generate-previewOctober 22, 2026gemini-omni-1.1-flash

Three things to keep straight:

  • This is about the Gemini API preview models. The deprecations page does not say Veo disappears from every Google product or from every reseller that hosts it.
  • Other providers set their own dates. If you use Veo through an aggregator, a creative app or a cloud platform, check that provider’s notice for its own timeline.
  • What changes for you is the model you call. Veo 3.1 makes clips of 4, 6 or 8 seconds with optional sound. The replacement and the alternatives below behave differently, so plan to re-test.

The Second Shutdown in a Month

OpenAI shut down the Sora 2 API on September 24, 2026. We covered the options in the best AI video generators after the Sora API shutdown. Two major video models leaving their APIs within a month makes the same point twice: a workflow tied to one model has an expiry date you do not control.

What to Move To, by Job

The comparisons below are on paper: published specifications from each vendor or provider, plus the public Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard, read on October 1, 2026.

Long clips with sound and speech: Seedance 2.5

ByteDance’s Seedance 2.5 makes clips of 4 to 30 seconds in one generation, at 480p, 720p or 1080p, with sound generated alongside the picture: speech, ambience and effects. It takes text, a start image, reference images, videos and audio, or an existing video to transform. Provider docs list up to 30 reference images, 10 reference videos and 10 audio references. It sits at #3 on the leaderboard (score 1143), well above Veo 3.1 at #17 (969).

If you used Veo for an 8-second clip with dialogue, Seedance 2.5 is the closest step up in length. Longer clips cost more, so draft short first. In our own use, Seedance 2.x declined photoreal photos of real people’s faces as input images, while generated talent and non-face references worked; that is our observation, not a published rule. Our Seedance 2.5 guide goes deeper.

Multi-reference scenes at a lower price: Seedance 2.0

Seedance 2.0 makes 4 to 15 seconds with sound included and takes up to 9 reference images. It is #7 on the leaderboard (1117) and costs less per second than 2.5. A good fit when your clips are short and you steer them with several reference images.

Controlled start and end frames: Kling 3 and Kling O3

Kuaishou’s Kling 3.0 makes 3 to 15 seconds. Standard renders 720p, Pro renders 1080p, and sound is optional. It accepts a start frame and an end frame and understands multi-shot prompts. Kling 3.0 Omni (O3) adds up to 7 reference images and can edit an existing video. On the leaderboard, Kling 3.0 Omni Pro is #14 (1020) and Kling 3.0 Pro #15 (1000).

Pick Kling when you need the clip to land on an exact final frame, or when you storyboard stills first and animate between them. For a direct match-up, read Kling 3 vs Seedance 2.5.

Fast, low-cost clips: Wan 2.6 Flash

Alibaba’s Wan 2.6 Flash is the low-cost, fast option at 720p or 1080p, and it needs a start image. Wan 2.6, its sibling, makes 5, 10 or 15 second clips. Use them for drafts, variations and high-volume social clips where speed matters more than polish.

Staying with Google: Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash

Google names Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash as the recommended replacement for all three Veo 3.1 preview models. On the Artificial Analysis leaderboard it appears as Gemini Omni Flash 1.1 at #6 (1119). If your stack is built on the Gemini API and you want the shortest path, start testing it there before October 22.

Migration Checklist

  1. Find every call. Search your code, automations and templates for the three model IDs above.
  2. Save what you need. Download any Veo outputs and keep the prompts that worked.
  3. Re-test your prompts. A prompt tuned for Veo will not give the same result on another model. Run your five most-used prompts on two candidates and compare.
  4. Check clip lengths. Veo makes 4, 6 or 8 seconds. Seedance 2.5 goes to 30 seconds, Kling 3 runs 3–15, Wan 2.6 offers 5, 10 or 15. Edits timed to 8-second clips may need new cuts.
  5. Check sound. Seedance generates sound with the picture; on Kling it is optional. Decide whether you want native sound or your own voiceover and music on top.
  6. Check references. Reference limits differ (Seedance 2.0 up to 9 images, Kling O3 up to 7), Wan 2.6 Flash needs a start image, and face inputs may be handled differently.
  7. Re-check resolution and cost. Kling Standard is 720p and Pro is 1080p; longer Seedance 2.5 clips cost more.
  8. Set a deadline before October 22, not on it.

Why a Curated Shelf Helps Here

Every model retirement creates the same chores: a new account, a new interface, new prompts, sometimes a new subscription. A tool with a curated shelf that is kept current does that work for you. When a better model arrives, it replaces the one it beats, and you keep the same login, the same credits and the same prompt box. That is the point of the shelf.

As of October 2026, the video shelf in MeetNour’s AI Studio includes Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0, Seedance 1.5 Pro, Kling 3, Kling O3, Wan 2.6 and Wan 2.6 Flash. Veo 3.1 Fast is still selectable today, but we do not recommend starting new work on it. Nour picks the right model for each job under a price ceiling and shows which model it picked and why, or you choose one yourself. The price is on the button before you generate.

If you would rather not pick models at all, Director Room takes a brief to three concepts, a storyboard with one editable frame per shot, the video clips, and a final video with voiceover and music — one button per step, with the price on each button.

FAQ

Is Veo 3.1 being shut down?

Google’s Gemini API deprecations page lists the three Veo 3.1 preview models — veo-3.1-generate-preview, veo-3.1-fast-generate-preview and veo-3.1-lite-generate-preview — with a shutdown date of October 22, 2026. The notice covers those Gemini API preview models; other products and providers set their own timelines.

What replaces Veo 3.1?

Google names Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash (gemini-omni-1.1-flash) as the recommended replacement. Outside Google, the main alternatives are Seedance 2.5 for long clips with sound, Kling 3 or Kling O3 for start and end frame control, and Wan 2.6 Flash for fast, low-cost clips.

Will Veo disappear from every app that offers it?

Not necessarily. The shutdown listed by Google applies to the Veo 3.1 preview models in the Gemini API, and apps or resellers that offer Veo may follow their own schedule. Check your provider’s notice to see what applies to you.

What is the best Veo 3.1 alternative for videos with dialogue?

On paper, Seedance 2.5 is the closest fit: it generates speech, ambience and effects together with the picture and makes clips of up to 30 seconds. It also ranks #3 on the Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard, read October 1, 2026.

Will my existing Veo videos stop working?

Files you have already downloaded stay on your devices. Save any outputs and prompts you still need before October 22, 2026, because after that date you cannot make new clips with those preview models through the Gemini API.
