Instagram Original Content Rule: Stop Reposting in 2026
Instagram now limits recommendations for accounts that mostly post other people’s work. On April 30, 2026, Instagram said its originality rules, which started with Reels in 2024, also cover photos and carousels. If most of what you post is someone else’s content, your account can lose a place in the spots where Instagram recommends content. The fix is simple to say and hard to do every week: post things that are really yours.
This guide explains what Instagram has actually said, what counts as original, and how to make fresh content without a big production team.
What Instagram Actually Said
According to Instagram’s own creators post, “Rewarding original creators on Instagram” (read October 12, 2026):
- The originality protections that began on Reels in 2024 now also apply to photo posts and carousels.
- Accounts that mainly repost other people’s work are no longer eligible for recommendations.
- The update does not change how posts from accounts you follow appear to you. Followers still see your posts.
- Instagram says 75% of recommendations in the US now go to original posts.
- The rule is separate from copyright. You are still responsible for having permission to use other people’s work.
PetaPixel and TechCrunch both reported the same announcement on April 30, 2026.
A note on the big numbers
Many blogs say reposters lose “40% to 80%” of their reach. Instagram did not publish those numbers, and I could not trace them to a study. This article does not use them. Treat any exact reach loss as a guess until Instagram says otherwise.
What Counts as Original
Instagram’s post gives a clear test: does your addition give new information, context or a new view beyond the original?
This counts as original:
- Photos and videos you made yourself.
- Graphics, series, guides and visual stories you designed.
- Someone else’s content that you changed in a big way, such as a meme or trending clip where your additions add real value, or a transformation made with Remix.
This does not count:
- Re-uploading someone’s work with no real creative input.
- Adding a border, a watermark or subtitles.
- Only crediting the creator in the caption.
The post also says you can share others’ content through Stories or reposts, and use Partnerships, Remix and the paid partnership label so everyone is credited.
How to Check If You Are Affected
Instagram says you can check Account Status at any time to see if your reach is limited. If your account is not eligible for recommendations, you can remove the flagged content or appeal.
You can also get back in. Instagram says an account can become eligible again when most of its recent photos, carousels and Reels are original over a 30-day period. Instagram calculates this from time to time, so recovery is not instant.
What This Means for Brands and Creators
Most brands do not run aggregator accounts. But three habits can put you at risk or waste your reach:
- Reposting the same clip across accounts with only a new logo. A logo or watermark is not enough.
- Recycling other platforms’ videos with visible watermarks. It is a weak signal at best and looks lazy at worst.
- Running out of ideas and filling the gap with other people’s posts. This is the real problem. Original content takes time, and time runs out.
So the goal is not only to avoid a penalty. It is to produce more original work, faster. One way is to create Instagram posts with AI from your own ideas and products.
How to Make Fresh, Original Content Fast
You do not need a camera crew. Here is a simple routine built on AI tools:
- Start from your own idea or product. Write down the one thing you want to say. Your idea is the original part.
- Make new images. In AI Studio you can create product shots and scene images from a prompt. Our guide to AI product photography shows how to keep them on-brand.
- Turn images into motion. Start with turning a photo into a video with AI, or use the moves in VFX Studio.
- Keep a recurring face. A consistent character makes your feed feel like yours. Read how to keep the same AI character across scenes in the Casting Room.
- Build a whole video from one brief. In the Director Room you write a brief and get concepts, a storyboard, clips and a final video with voiceover and music.
- Add captions last. Caption Studio adds captions as the final step.
Be honest with yourself about one point. Instagram’s post does not say how it treats AI-generated media, and I did not find a statement about it. What it does say is that original work is work you create or substantially transform. Making new content from your own idea fits that description, but check Instagram’s current rules and its guidance on labeling AI content before you post. MeetNour makes the media. It does not post for you.

FAQ
Does Instagram penalize reposts?
Instagram says accounts that mainly repost other people’s work are not eligible for recommendations. It does not describe a penalty for followers: your followers still see your posts. Source: Instagram creators post, April 30, 2026, read October 12, 2026.
Does adding a watermark or captions make a repost original?
No. Instagram says adding a border, a watermark or subtitles, or only crediting the creator in the caption, does not make a repost original. A substantial change that adds new information, context or a new view can.
How long does it take to recover recommendations?
Instagram says an account can become eligible again once most of its recently posted photos, carousels and Reels are original over a 30-day period. It calculates this periodically, so check Account Status for your current state.
Do these rules apply to photos and carousels, or only Reels?
Both. The Reels rules from 2024 were extended to photos and carousels on April 30, 2026.
Can I still share other creators’ content?
Yes, if you credit them through the tools Instagram points to: Partnerships, Remix, the paid partnership label, and reposts or Stories. You remain responsible for permission to use their work.
